The-Perks-of-Being-a-Wallflower-Poster-585x426It is rare that a story stuns me.

I chose The Perks of Being a Wallflower from Redbox on Sunday night because Emma Watson is in it and it had good ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. As the movie ended I had tears in my eyes. They weren’t from sadness or because of the story, well, perhaps so, on the level of story, but the deeper, more profound reason for my tears was how the story was written, told, expressed. This is one of those stories that after being exposed to it I whisper to myself, “That’s what I want to write. This is the impact I want to have on my readers. This. “Are you crazy?” the voice is louder now.

“Of course I am!” I shout. The woman turns toward me; gives me a funny look.

I quickly put my cell phone to my ear so she’ll think I’m on a call. “Craziness is the essential ingredient.”

“HA! Then you’ve got it made! You’re crazier than the Mayans!” Read the rest of this entry »

Three items of note caught my attention this week… all caught up for centuries in this historic battle.

Brown University thoroughly investigated its historic ties to slavery and the slave trade, and its profit therefrom, and issued a remarkable report a few years back. This week it was announced that Brown will acknowledge its deep, historic connection in a very public way by following one of the recommendations in the report and create a slavery memorial in a prominent place on campus.
