Recommended Books & Films

In addition to Gather at the Table and Inheriting the Trade, I highly recommend the following…

Things you probably didn’t learn in school (I know I didn’t…)

The Legacy of Slavery (and what we can do about it)

History of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery

  • Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North; the Emmy-nominated documentary about Tom’s New England ancestral relatives, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. It was this journey with nine cousins to retrace the Triangle Trade and gain powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide that led Tom to write Inheriting the Trade.
  • The Ghost in Your Genes; the BBC documentary on Epigenetics, the newly emerging field of science that studies how past events (including trauma) trigger our genes in ways that are passed down through generations.
  • 13th: Ava DuVernay’s powerful film about race, justice and mass incarceration; titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibited slavery, except as punishment for a crime. Not to be missed.
  • I Am Not Your Negro: As I wrote in my blog, “If we “white” people watch I Am Not Your Negro with open minds and hearts, the world will change for the better. Period.”
