The initial, and primary, purpose of this blog is to discuss issues related to the legacy of slavery that are raised in my book, Inheriting the Trade: A Northern Family Confronts Its Legacy as the Largest Slave-Trading Dynasty in U.S. History and in the Emmy-nominated film of our family journey, Katrina Browne’s Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North.

Katrina Browne and I are 7th cousins. Our common ancestor died in the 1700’s. A total of ten of us (ranging from siblings to 7th cousins) embarked upon a journey of discovery that began when we retraced the steps of our ancestors, the most successful slave-trading family in U.S. history, through the Triangle Trade route from New England to Ghana and Cuba and back. We uncovered our family’s–and our nation’s–hidden history in the summer of 2001. The journey continues…
